The Milwaukee Brewers surely would have liked to enter their home opener playing like serious contenders in the NL Central. Instead, they're off to their worst start in eight years.
The Brewers continue to search for their first win when they open a four-game set against hot-hitting Brian McCann and the Atlanta Braves at Miller Park on Monday.
Milwaukee may have the talent to compete for its first division title since 1982, but didn't look up to the task over the weekend while being swept in three games by reigning Central champion Cincinnati.
The Brewers hit .223 and posted a 6.57 ERA while serving up eight homers in the season-opening series, which ended with Sunday's 12-3 loss. They're off to their worst start since opening 0-6 in 2003.
"We definitely don't want to start off the way we did," said left-hander Randy Wolf, Sunday's loser after allowing six runs and 10 hits in four innings. "But the main thing is keeping our heads on straight and understanding we are a good team. We just need to keep on working hard and not lose sight of what's going to happen this year and what we need to do."
Atlanta (2-1) might not be the ideal opponent for the Brewers, who have dropped eight of the last 11 meetings in the series overall, and six of the last seven at Miller Park while being outscored 55-18.
McCann went 6 for 13 with five RBIs as Atlanta took two of three at Washington over the weekend, collecting three hits and driving in four runs in an 11-2 victory Sunday.
The All-Star catcher is 11 for 29 with two homers and 10 RBIs over his last eight games against the Brewers. He tied a career high with five RBIs in an 11-6 home win July 18, the final meeting between the clubs last season.
Chris Narveson begins his first full season in Milwaukee's rotation by taking the mound for the home opener.
"I'm pretty pumped up," Narveson told the team's official website, "but it's just another game, one of many we're going to have this year. (In terms of) mental preparation, you have to look at it that way. Obviously, it's just another game, but it's the first home game. It would be nice for us to go in and have a good showing."
The left-hander went 12-9 with a 4.99 ERA in 2010, joining the rotation in late April after beginning the season in the bullpen. He allowed two runs in six innings of a 6-3 victory at Atlanta on July 17.
The Braves will give the ball to 24-year-old rookie Brandon Beachy, who will try to translate an outstanding preseason into the games that count.
The right-hander threw 20 innings in five spring training outings, allowing two runs and 12 hits while striking out 21.
"I'm ready. Hopefully I can carry over what I've been doing in (spring training) and just be sharp," said Beachy, who went 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts for the Braves in 2010. "It happened so quickly (last season). Now, I was competing for this and hoping to be in this situation all spring. Here I am."
Ryan Braun has been one of the few bright spots for Milwaukee, going 4 for 11 with a pair of solo homers. The left fielder has a .353 average with four homers and nine RBIs in his last nine games against Atlanta.
