The center fielder had two hits Tuesday, including a three-run homer in the 11th to finish with four RBIs -- matching his total from the previous 10 games. He had been 1 for 17 over the previous five games, but could be in for another big offensive effort.
Stubbs is hitting .333 with two homers and five RBIs in five career games at San Diego, collecting at least one hit in each of the four games where he had an at-bat.
While Stubbs tries to build on Tuesday's performance, the Reds' staff would like to continue showing its own improvement. The pitchers have a collective 4.27 ERA, but have limited the Padres to 11 hits in this series, with the bullpen giving up one run and seven hits in eight innings.
Travis Wood (1-1, 5.25 ERA) takes the mound trying to win for just the second time in eight starts.
The left-hander is 1/3 with a 4.57 ERA over his last seven games dating back to his rookie season last year. He turned in his worst outing of that stretch Friday, getting tagged for six runs and seven hits in five-plus innings of a 13-2 loss at Arizona.
Wood's only meeting with the Padres resulted in a 4-3 road loss Sept. 25, as he allowed three runs in seven innings while not getting a decision.
San Diego, which has a .213 average this season, has dropped five of six while being held to four runs or fewer in each of the losses. The club's struggles at the plate were clear Tuesday, when they went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position and left the bases loaded in the ninth.
"We need to get one or two hits to get everyone going," third baseman Chase Headley said. "Right now, we're having a hard time in doing that, and that magnifies everything."
