Game Review: Off to their best start in nine years, the Cleveland Indians are trying to stay grounded.
The visiting Indians look to extend their winning streak to eight games and continue their recent success against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.
After giving up 23 runs in consecutive losses to Chicago, Cleveland (7-2) has won seven straight to take the early lead in the AL Central.
Coming off a three-game home sweep of Boston, the Indians outscored the Mariners 20-8 to win all three in Seattle, including 6-4 on Sunday.
This is the best start since opening 11-1 in 2002 for Cleveland, which is seeking to win eight straight for the first time since a 10-game run Aug. 17-27, 2008.
"It's still early," second baseman Orlando Cabrera told the Indians' official website. "It's too early to judge anybody in a good way or a bad way.
The Indians are averaged 5.8 runs per game on the season, and their staff ERA during the winning streak is 1.86.
"We're playing good baseball right now," manager Manny Acta said. "We continue to get good pitching and play good defense and good things are going to happen."
Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera went 6 for 14 with two homers against the Mariners. However, he's 1 for 23 in his last six games against the Angels.
Former Angel Orlando Cabrera went 6 for 10 in Seattle. He is a career .310 hitter against Los Angeles, for which he was the starting shortstop from 2005-07.
Mitch Talbot (0-0, 4.15 ERA) takes the ball for the Indians after he gave up two runs and struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings and did not factor in the decision of an 8-4 win over Boston on Wednesday.
The right-hander was solid in his only previous appearance versus Los Angeles, allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings of a 9-2 win in Anaheim last April 27.
The Angels (5-4) have won two in a row and four of five. Torii Hunter had an RBI and Jered Weaver struck out 15 in 7 2/3 innings in a 3-1 victory over Toronto on Sunday.
"Hopefully this gives us some momentum going into our series with Cleveland," Weaver told the Angels' official website.
Hunter is batting .333 while hitting safely in seven straight games. He's hit .421 with five homers and 10 RBIs his last 10 home contests versus Cleveland.
Los Angeles has decided to push back originally scheduled starter Dan Haren to Tuesday after he threw a scoreless 14th inning to earn the win in Saturday's 6-5 victory. Instead, the Angels have called up 21-year-old right-hander Tyler Chatwood to make his major league debut Monday.
A second-round pick from the 2008 draft, Chatwood earned the promotion despite having only 6 2/3 innings of Triple-A experience. He was the organization's minor league pitcher of the year last season.
The Angels will be without shortstop Erick Aybar for the series after he was placed on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle on his left side. He is 5 for 12 in three games this season.
The Indians held a 5-4 edge in last season's series. The teams split six meetings in Anaheim.
