"I think we've changed the mentality here about our idea of pitching and our pride about what we do on the mound," Randy Wolf said Thursday after striking out 10 in 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
Chris Narveson (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who gets the ball in the series opener and will try to help Milwaukee win five straight for the first time since July 22-26, has been the club's most effective starter
The left-hander has pitched 13 scoreless innings.
"Does he have an ERA yet? Sick. He's been outstanding," first baseman Prince Fielder said after Narveson threw seven innings of six-hit ball in Saturday's 6-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
While Narveson is just the fifth Brewers pitcher to open the season with consecutive starts of at least six innings and no runs allowed, he is not overlooking Washington (5-7).
"That team we're going to be facing, whoever it is next, they don't care about (13 scoreless innings)," Narveson said. "They want to get to you just as bad as anybody else."
As good as Narveson has been, Washington is probably glad to see any pitcher not wearing a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.
After Roy Halladay held them to six hits in Wednesday's 3-2 loss, the Nationals had just three hits against Cliff Lee in a 4-0 defeat Thursday.
Washington is batting .203 and averaging 2.8 runs in six home games.
"I've got to get in base if the team wants to score runs," said leadoff man Ian Desmond, who went 0 for 12 in three games against Philadelphia and is hitless in 25 at-bats at Nationals Park. "And if we want to see our pitching staff pitch well, we've got to give them a lead. It's as simple as that."
Washington will try to provide more run support with Tom Gorzelanny (0-1, 8.44) making his home debut.
Acquired from the Cubs in the offseason, the left-hander lost his first start with the Nationals on Saturday, 8-4 to the New York Mets. Gorzelanny went 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs and four hits, including two homers.
He is 4-3 with a 4.81 ERA in 10 starts versus Milwaukee.
Ryan Braun -- 9 for 19 with three homers against Gorzelanny -- is batting .320 (8 for 25) with two home runs and six RBIs over the Brewers' last eight games.
Fielder is 13 for 26 with three homers and 15 RBIs while hitting safely in seven straight. He was 3 for 20 against Washington last season, but Milwaukee won four of six.
Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth hit .250 in six games against the Brewers in 2010 while with Philadelphia. He is batting .333 (7 for 21) at home this season with one homer and one RBI.
Washington won two of three in Milwaukee's last visit from April 16-18.
BrewersThe Brewers look to extend their season-high winning streak to five Friday night in the nation's capital as they'll try to post their fifth straight victory over the Washington Nationals.
