Sabathia's last two starts against the Twins were wins in the openers of the last two division series between the clubs, improving his mark to 7-0 with a 1.66 ERA in his last seven outings against them.
The left-hander has failed to win all three opening day starts for New York (3-1), but has bounced back the previous two seasons by winning his second outing. That's what the Yankees are hoping will happen after he allowed three runs over six innings last Thursday in a 6-3 victory over Detroit.
The Yankees have won 14 of their last 15 home games against the Twins, including six by one run.
"We've just played a little better than they have the last couple of years," Sabathia told the Yankees' official website.
New York did all its scoring Monday early as Alex Rodriguez had a two-run homer in the first inning and Jorge Posada added a two-run blast in the second.
That was all Ivan Nova needed, as he matched Sabathia for the longest outing by a Yankees starter with six sharp innings. Joba Chamberlain, Rafael Soriano and Mariano Rivera each pitched a scoreless inning to finish up, much like they did in Thursday's season opener.
"We got behind early, but we battled and just couldn't come up with one more run," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Their back end of the bullpen is pretty good."
Brian Duensing (NR) will make his first career regular-season start against the Yankees after going 0-2 with a 11.25 ERA in two postseason starts against them over the last two seasons. He failed to last past the fifth inning in those games -- both at Yankee Stadium.
"I'd like to have a good outing so that I'll like coming here," Duensing said. "Right now, I don't like it at all."
Yankee captain Derek Jeter went 3 for 4 with a homer against him in those outings while Nick Swisher had two doubles in four at-bats.
Duensing, a college teammate of Chamberlain's at Nebraska, went 10-3 with a 2.62 ERA last season for the Twins. The left-hander was inserted into the rotation July 23, and went 7-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 13 starts.
He's the first southpaw that New York will face. As a result, manager Joe Girardi will give Andruw Jones his Yankees debut in left field. Jones batted .230 with 19 homers and 48 RBIs for the White Sox last year.
