The Philadelphia left-hander looks to continue his success in his hometown while trying to help the Phillies to a ninth straight road victory over the Padres on Friday night.
Hamels (1-1, 4.32 ERA) is 4-2 with a 2.75 ERA in nine starts versus San Diego, including 2-1 while giving up five runs in 28 2/3 innings in four outings at Petco Park. He allowed four hits in eight innings of a 5-0 win in his last appearance there Aug. 29.
"You can't beat the weather here," joked Hamels, who has allowed two runs in 23 innings in his last three starts in San Diego.
After Hamels yielded six runs in 2 2/3 innings to the Mets in his 2011 debut, he's given up two over 14 innings in his last two starts. Both runs came in seven innings of the Phillies' 3-2 win over Florida on Sunday.
Hamels will try to help Philadelphia (12-6) to a third straight victory overall after it opened this four-game set with a 3-0 win Thursday. Winners in 21 of their last 25 at San Diego, the Phillies have outscored the Padres 36-13 during their eight-game winning streak at Petco Park.
Placido Polanco had two hits while Ben Francisco homered and drove in two runs as Philadelphia improved to 5-2 away from home with its third straight road win. Polanco is batting .360 this season, and .339 lifetime against the Padres.
San Diego (8-11) has lost three of four and been shut out a major league-leading five times this season. The Padres, who have scored an NL-low 60 runs, were not blanked for a fifth time last year until July 27.
After breaking out for 12 hits in a 5-4 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, San Diego was held to four hits by Roy Oswalt and three relievers.
"It's tough," manager Bud Black said. "When we need to score runs, it's going to come from all eight guys doing their thing. There are not one or two guys who carry the load. It's going to have to be a collective thing. Right now, we have a number of guys who are a little bit off offensively."
Chris Denorfia's opposite-field single with two outs in the fifth inning ended Oswalt's no-hit bid. Denorfia is one of the few Padres swinging the bat well, going 8 for 15 with two home runs in his last seven games.
Ryan Ludwick went 5 for 8 with two doubles and a homer in Wednesday's doubleheader, but was 0 for 4 on Thursday to drop his average to .188. He's 5 for 13 with two homers against Hamels.
San Diego's Clayton Richard (1-0, 4.50) takes the mound trying to bounce back from his worst start of the season. The left-hander had allowed five runs over 14 2/3 innings in his first three outings, but gave up six in 5 1/3 innings and did not factor in the decision in an 8-6 win at Houston on Sunday.
Richard's only previous appearance versus Philadelphia came in the loss to Hamels in August, when he allowed four runs -- two earned -- in 7 2/3 innings.
Polanco is 1 for 10 against Richard.
