Though the Cardinals have won five straight overall versus Los Angeles (6-7), Thursday's victory snapped a three-game skid at Dodger Stadium.
"You know they're going to score, so it was just a matter of time for them," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, whose team has dropped three in a row. "You don't want to catch them at that time, but if we do, we've got to find a way to shut them down and keep them down."
Despite undergoing an appendectomy after the season opener, Holliday is batting .391 with seven RBIs in six games. He's a lifetime .345 hitter against the Dodgers and his 70 runs in 84 meetings since 2005 are the most in the majors versus Los Angeles.
Pujols is batting just .226, but is 7 for 18 the last four games. He is 5 for 13 with two home runs against Jon Garland, who will come off the disabled list to make his 2011 debut and begin his second stint with the Dodgers on Friday.
Garland, who tied for a team high in wins while going 14-12 with a 3.47 ERA for San Diego in 2010, signed a one-year, $5 million deal to be the Dodgers' fifth starter.
However, the right-hander suffered a strained oblique muscle during spring training and missed his first start due to injury in 10 years. He allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings of a rehab start for Class A Rancho Cucamonga last week.
"I want to be out there helping the team win games," Garland told the Dodgers' official website. "I'm 100 percent."
A two-time 18-game winner with the White Sox, Garland went 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA in six starts after being acquired by the Dodgers from Arizona in 2009.
Garland, however, is 1-4 with a 5.02 ERA versus St. Louis.
The Cardinals counter with Kyle Lohse (1-1, 3.00 ERA), who has started strong after a forearm strain limited him to 18 starts in 2010.
Lohse allowed a run and five hits in eight innings of a 6-1 win at San Francisco on Sunday. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 4.30 ERA in four starts against the Dodgers.
Los Angeles' Andre Ethier is 2 for 7 against Lohse, but is batting .405 during an 11-game hitting streak -- one behind the Mets' Jose Reyes for the longest in the majors.
