He can still join the Angels' Jered Weaver -- scheduled to pitch Saturday -- with six wins. Baltimore's Zach Britton also will try for his sixth victory Friday.
Masterson has allowed four earned runs and 16 hits in 25 1/3 innings to go 2-0 in four starts against the Angels. He yielded only a homer to Torii Hunter in seven innings of a 6-1 victory at Los Angeles on Sept. 7.
"They're a scrappy team," Oakland outfielder Ryan Sweeney said. "They have the best record in baseball for a reason."
Jack Hannahan and Lou Marson had RBI singles in the 12th to help the Indians win for the seventh time in their final at-bat.
Cleveland has matched the best start in franchise history, going 21-9 for the seventh time.
"It was a big win for our team, and we go to Anaheim trying to keep it going," said Marson, who had three hits.
Asdrubal Cabrera and Travis Hafner each had two hits Thursday. Hafner is batting .413 his last 14 games, and Cabrera .308 with seven RBIs his last nine.
However, Hafner and Cabrera combined to go 3 for 12 when the Indians lost two of three in Anaheim from April 11-13.
The Indians again could face a stiff challenge against the Angels (18-14), who salvaged a split of a four-game set in Boston by winning the final two to conclude a 4-3 trip. After going deep into the night to beat the Red Sox 5-3 in 13 innings Wednesday, Los Angeles broke out for an 11-0 victory in Thursday's finale.
"It definitely feels good to get the last two," said second baseman Howie Kendrick, who had three hits and two RBIs.
Bobby Abreu drove in three runs Thursday after he delivered a game-winning single in the extra-inning contest.
"Hopefully that hit Bobby got did something for us, got something started," Thursday's winning pitcher Joel Pineiro told the Angels' official website.
Abreu is 5 for 12 with a double against Masterson.
Rookie Tyler Chatwood (2-1, 4.94) takes the ball for the Angels trying to bounce back after he allowed five runs and nine hits in four innings of a 6-5 win at Tampa Bay on Sunday.
The right-hander gave up four runs and homers to Cabrera and Matt LaPorta in five innings of a 4-0 loss to Cleveland in his major league debut April 11.
