Lohse last won more than six games in a season when he went 15-6 for the Cardinals in 2008. Opposing hitters are batting just .199 against him and he has walked just 14 batters in 74 1/3 innings. Lohse beat the San Diego Padres in his last outing, giving up one run and five hits in eight innings. It was the eighth time in 10 starts that he has allowed two or fewer runs. Lohse is 1-3 with a 3.92 ERA in seven career starts against Colorado. Both Troy Tulowitzki (.500 in 12 at-bats) and Todd Helton (.471 in 17 at-bats) have hit him well. Chacin gave up a season-high five earned runs while losing to Arizona in his last outing. He allowed just five hits in seven innings. He has yielded two or fewer runs in five of 10 starts. Opponents are batting just .203 against him. This will be Chacin’s first career start and second appearance against the Cardinals.
ABOUT THE ROCKIES (25-26): Iannetta had four hits but wasn’t the only Colorado player to enjoy a big night Saturday. Ryan Spilborghs had three hits and four RBIs and Eric Young Jr. had three hits in his second game since being recalled. Young stole a base Saturday for Colorado’s first steal since May 16, ending a stretch of 11 straight games without one. Left fielder Carlos Gonzalez had two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Gonzalez is batting .300 during the streak to up his average to .258, the highest it has been since April 19. Outfielder Seth Smith missed his second straight game with a groin injury. He is batting .306.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS (31-22): Second-year outfielder Jon Jay has been on a roll that has lifted his batting average to .350. Jay went 3-for-5 Saturday to boost his hitting streak to eight games. He is batting .432 (16-for-37) during streak. Jay has eight multi-hit games in his last 11 contests. Jay’s production has softened the recent absence of Matt Holliday, who may return to the starting lineup Sunday. Holliday suffered a quadriceps injury against Kansas City on May 22 and has appeared as a pinch hitter each of the past two games. Albert Pujols has one homer in 100 at-bats this month and has just eight on the season. Pujols had 12 homers when May ended last season en route to hitting 42.
FINAL PITCH: “The manner in which we went about our offense is the way that it was worked on for six weeks in spring training. It was the way it was for much of the month of April. Situational at-bats were great, run-producing at-bats were great, plate discipline was great.” – Colorado manager Jim Tracy after the Rockies erupted for 15 runs and 18 hits on Saturday.
