After a 2 hour, 35 minute rain delay in the fifth inning, the Angels (17-14) and Red Sox (14-16) continued to play until the 13th, when Bobby Abreu's two-run single off emergency reliever Daisuke Matsuzaka delivered the winning runs in a 5-3 victory for Los Angeles.

"It was a game where there could have been some letdown," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of the contest that included exactly five hours of playing time, "but the guys hung in there and came out in the end."
It was the first win over the Red Sox for the Angels in seven meetings this season, and only the second in 17 games between these clubs since the start of 2010.
Los Angeles still hasn't beaten Lackey (2-3, 5.65 ERA), the 6-foot-6 right-hander who signed with Boston prior to the 2010 season, following 102 wins over nine seasons with the Angels. Lackey has compiled a 2.45 ERA while winning all four of his starts against his former club, including a 7-0 victory April 24 in Anaheim in which he allowed six hits over eight innings.
Lackey took a hard-luck loss Saturday, giving up two runs over six innings of Boston's 2-0 defeat to Seattle.
"On a lot of nights we're commending him, but we just didn't score enough runs," manager Terry Francona said.
Despite the outcome, the right-hander continued to rebound from a rough start to 2011. Lackey has given up just three earned runs in 20 innings over three starts since surrendering 15 total runs in his first two outings.
Boston's entire rotation has shown a similar pattern. The Red Sox rotation's ERA is 1.79 in the last 18 games, compared with the 6.71 mark it posted during the team's 2-10 start. Josh Beckett allowed one hit in 4 1/3 scoreless innings Wednesday, departing after the lengthy rain delay.
Boston starters have allowed two earned runs or fewer in 16 of the last 18 games, including all seven versus the Angels. The rotation has a 0.94 ERA and a .175 opponent batting average in the season series with Los Angeles.
Lackey, the former Angel, will be opposed by onetime Red Sox right-hander Joel Pineiro (0-0, 1.29). Unlike Lackey's tenure in Anaheim, Pineiro's stay in Boston was brief and unremarkable. He went 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances in 2007, when the Red Sox dealt him to St. Louis midseason.
This will be Pineiro's second start after opening the season on the disabled list with shoulder tightness. He gave up one run and four hits over seven strong innings Saturday, but didn't get a decision as the Angels lost 2-1 in 10 innings to Tampa Bay.
Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is 11 for 25 with three homers and three doubles off Pineiro. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who went 0 for 6 with four strikeouts Wednesday and is mired in a 6-for-50 slump, is 4 for 6 with a double against the Los Angeles starter.
This is the final game in the season series.
AngelsPerhaps now they can finally find a way to beat John Lackey.
