Winners in four of five, the Padres (18-23) have scored at least six runs in each of their last six games after doing so just five times in their first 35 of the season.
"It's a lot of fun watching those guys play, being excited and swinging the bat so well," Clayton Richard said after posting his first win since April 2 on Monday.
San Diego is hitting .235 on the season, but .336 while totaling 51 runs and 77 hits the last six contests -- all away from spacious Petco Park.
"We know we were a better club than we showed," said Headley, who is batting .375 while San Diego's won four of seven on an eight-game trip. "We kept plowing through and hopefully we can keep scoring runs."
Ludwick is 9 for 20 with three home runs and 11 RBIs the last five games to raise his average 37 points to a mere .218.
Though the Padres have hit well of late, they have not done so against scheduled Arizona starter Daniel Hudson (3-5, 4.41 ERA), who has yielded one run and eight hits in 14 2/3 innings while going 2-0 versus San Diego.
Hudson gave up five hits in seven innings of a 6-0 win at San Diego on May 7.
"They're a pretty scrappy team so they're obviously not going to beat you with home runs too often so you just go out there and throw strikes, and the rest takes care of itself," Hudson said.
The right-hander had his three-game winning streak snapped despite limiting San Francisco to three runs over 6 2/3 innings of a 3-2 road loss Thursday.
Hudson looks to help the Diamondbacks (17-23) avoid a third straight defeat to San Diego after they lost for the sixth time in eight games overall in the opener.
Backup catcher Henry Blanco homered twice and Justin Upton added a solo shot for the Diamondbacks. Upton has hit two of his eight home runs this season against the Padres. He's 3 for 9 against scheduled starter Tim Stauffer (0-1, 3.47).
The right-hander has looked strong while giving up two runs in 12 2/3 innings while going 1-0 in two starts versus Arizona. He allowed four hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings of a 4-3, 11-inning win over the Diamondbacks on May 6.
Stauffer, who has not received a decision in his last six starts, could not hold an early 5-0 lead and allowed a season-high six runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 13-6 win at Milwaukee on Wednesday.
