The NL-leading Philadelphia Phillies should get a boost to their struggling offense with the addition of Chase Utley. They might not need it Monday night given the way Cole Hamels has dominated the Cincinnati Reds.
Utley will be activated off the 15-day disabled list for the Phillies before they send Hamels to the mound to begin a four-game home series against the sliding Reds in the teams' first meeting since last year's playoffs.
Although he spent nine games at Clearwater, the Phillies are unsure what to expect from Utley, who will be in his customary No. 3 slot in the batting order.
"It's not only what he does for you on the field, but what he does in the clubhouse," left fielder Raul Ibanez said. "It's a big boost for us."
"We're going to hit, we're going to hit better," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We're going to bottom out one of these days. Hopefully, it was today."
Cincinnati (25-22) also hopes it has bottomed out after losing a season-high five straight, capped by a sweep in Cleveland over the weekend.
The Reds won't be encouraged to see Hamels (5-2, 2.92 ERA), who is 6-0 with a 1.07 ERA in seven career starts against them. That doesn't even include his five-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 2-0 victory that completed year's NL division series sweep.
The left-hander has gotten the better of left-handed hitters Jay Bruce (2 for 15 including postseason) and Joey Votto (2 for 13) over the years. Brandon Phillips (3 for 26) has also struggled against him.
Hamels, who struck out eight over eight innings Wednesday in a 2-1 victory over Colorado, has allowed one run over 23 2/3 innings in winning three career home starts against Cincinnati.
The Reds have lost eight straight at Citizens Bank Park, including both games in last year's division series. The Phillies have won seven straight overall against Cincinnati, posting shutouts in four of the last five meetings.
"We've got to get our stuff together and go to Philly," manager Dusty Baker said. "And it is always tough there."
It won't be easy for Bronson Arroyo (3-4, 4.11), who has posted an 8.10 ERA in losing his last four regular-season starts against the Phillies. He lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs -- one earned -- in Game 2 of last year's division series, and did not get a decision in a 7-4 loss.
Utley is 5 for 12 in his career against Arroyo, including playoffs.
"I would have liked for him to have waited one more week," Arroyo told the Reds' official website.
The right-hander is 2-0 with a 0.92 ERA in three road starts this year, but he yielded five runs in seven innings Wednesday in a 5-0 home loss to Pittsburgh.
