Called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace the injured Jon Lester, Weiland (0-0, 13.50 ERA) went four-plus innings in an 8-6 win over Baltimore on July 10, giving up six runs and eight hits in his major league debut. The young right-hander struggled with his control, throwing just 42 of 78 pitches for strikes and hitting Mark Reynolds and Guerrero.
Weiland and Red Sox manager Terry Francona were ejected following the Guerrero plunking in the fifth inning. The umpire had issued warnings to both teams an inning earlier when Tuesday's scheduled starter Jeremy Guthrie (3-13, 4.45) hit Kevin Youkilis with a changeup.
According to the Red Sox's official website, Weiland became the third pitcher in major league history to get ejected in his first start.
"I don't think it was intentional from the young kid -- location was a challenge for him," Showalter said. "So judging intent, I don't think there was any intent there on his part."
Even with slugger David Ortiz suspended the rest of this series for his involvement in a benches-clearing brawl with Baltimore (38-55) on July 8, the Red Sox (58-36) have every intention of keeping their bats going after tagging Orioles pitching for 16 hits in Monday's 15-10 victory.
Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia and Darnell McDonald each drove in three runs to help Boston win for the 13th time in 15 games and prevent Baltimore from posting its third consecutive victory following a season-worst nine-game skid.
"After getting a lot of guys on base and not being able to get the job done (in Sunday's 1-0, 16-inning win at Tampa Bay), it felt good to come out tonight and score some runs," outfielder Josh Reddick said.
Pedroia has been Boston's top run producer lately, batting .386 with seven homers and 16 RBIs during a 16-game hitting streak -- the AL's longest current streak and one shy of his career high. Pedroia has 11 hits, including three doubles, in 38 at-bats against Guthrie, who leads the majors in losses.
In addition to taking the loss July 10 when he went 3 1/3 innings while coming out of the bullpen for the second time this season, the veteran right-hander has dropped all three of his July starts, posting a 7.94 ERA in those outings.
"I'm just not throwing the ball well," Guthrie said after giving up six runs in Thursday's 8-4 loss to Cleveland.
Guthrie struck out six in six scoreless innings of Baltimore's 5-4 home win over Boston on April 27.
Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis, the reigning AL player of the week, has one hit in each of the nine games between these clubs in 2011, but Baltimore is 2-7. Markakis is 14 for 44 with two homers and nine RBIs during a team-best 11-game hitting streak.
First baseman Derrek Lee, 13 for 34 against the Red Sox this season after going 2 for 4 with a two-run triple Monday, hit a two-run shot off Weiland earlier this month.
