If the Colorado Rockies are to contend for a postseason spot in 2011, they are likely going to need another big year from Troy Tulowitzki.
Trying to further overcome a rough start, the star shortstop looks to help the Rockies to a third consecutive victory and a sweep of a two-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday at Coors Field.
After hitting a career-high .315 last season and signing a lucrative long-term contract over the winter, Tulowitzki is 1 for 11 batting cleanup for Colorado (2-1) through three games.
However, he showed some life by snapping an 0-for-9 start with a homer in Colorado's 3-0 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday. He is 5 for 7 in his last two games versus Los Angeles.
"It was only two games. A lot of people were panicking or something," Tulowitzki said. "I wasn't very happy myself. I always want to get hits. But at the same time, you look at it and it is two games."
As Tulowitzki continues to try to find his form, Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta is 4 for 9 after connecting for a solo homer Tuesday.
"This is what you prepare for in spring training, to come out and play well," Iannetta said. "It's not a given that it's going to happen. But it's a good feeling to start off like this."
The Rockies have a chance to continue their recent home success against scheduled Los Angeles starter Chad Billingsley, who signed a three-year contract extension prior to the season. The right-hander is 1/3 with a 4.57 ERA as a starter at Coors Field.
Billingsley won his season debut Friday, allowing three runs in six innings to get credit for the Dodgers' 4-3 victory over San Francisco.
Colorado starters Jorge De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin have not allowed a run in the last two games. Right-hander Jason Hammel looks to keep that run going when he makes his season debut Wednesday.
Hammel went 10-9 with a 4.81 ERA in 2010, but faltered late, going 0-2 with an 8.61 ERA in his last five starts. That included a four-run, five-inning effort in a 7-6, 11-inning loss at Los Angeles on Sept. 19.
Hammel looked better in spring training, going 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA in five starts.
"Each and every time he's been out there, the ball has come out of his hand very, very well," manager Jim Tracy told the Rockies' official website.
Hammel is 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA in five starts versus Los Angeles (3-2), which has been shut out in both of its losses.
Andre Ethier, who had one of the Dodgers' five hits Tuesday, is 5 for 9 over the last three games.
Los Angeles third baseman Casey Blake is expected to be activated and could be in the lineup Wednesday after opening the season on the disabled list with a back injury.
"If he's here, he's here to play," manager Don Mattingly told the Dodgers' official website.
Blake hit .305 with three homers and 12 RBIs versus Colorado in 2010.
