Slugger Prince Fielder has helped pace the offensive surge, going 12 for 22 with 14 RBIs in the last six games. He hit a three-run home run Wednesday, his third in four games with all going to the opposite field.
"When he's driving the ball the other way like that, that's bad news for the opposing pitchers because there's really not much they can do with him," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said.
Though Fielder has hit 22 of his 194 career homers versus Pittsburgh -- his most against any opponent -- he is 3 for 42 with no homers and 13 strikeouts against scheduled starter Paul Maholm (0-1, 2.19 ERA).
All-Star Ryan Braun is batting .342 this season, and has gone 10 for 30 with a homer versus Maholm.
The Pirates' left-hander is 3-6 with a 4.53 ERA in 17 starts versus Milwaukee. Maholm gave up five runs -- three earned -- in 5 2/3 innings of a 7-1 loss to Colorado last Thursday.
Milwaukee counters with Randy Wolf (0-2, 7.20), who tries to avoid matching a career high with his third straight loss to open a season.
The left-hander has allowed six in runs in each of his first two starts, though only two were earned in six innings of a 7-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday.
The Brewers have committed three errors in those outings by Wolf, who lost his first three starts in 2001 with Philadelphia.
"That's two games in a row where I'm pretty much one pitch away from getting out of the inning, and I'm leaving the ball over the plate and really being hurt by it," he told the Brewers' official website.
Though Wolf is 8-3 with a 4.35 ERA versus Pittsburgh, he went 0-2 with an 11.00 ERA in his last three starts against the Pirates last season.
Matt Diaz is 7 for 16 against Wolf, and had two of the Pirates' four hits Wednesday.
Pittsburgh has lost three in a row and four of five after beginning the season by winning consecutive road series for the first time since 2007.
"All I'm looking at is how we are executing and if we are getting better," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "For the most part, we've executed pretty well this season but this time we didn't."
Light-hitting shortstop Ronny Cedeno is 9 for 18 against Wolf, but 0 for 11 in his last four games.
Pittsburgh's Jose Tabata went 0 for 2 on Wednesday after getting a hit in each of the previous 10 games.
