The Yankees' rotation took another hit when struggling Phil Hughes was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a "dead arm." An 18-game winner last season, Hughes has seen his velocity drop through his first three starts.
While Hughes will be replaced by veteran Bartolo Colon in the rotation, Garcia (0-0, 9.00 ERA) will make his first start with New York. Garcia made 28 starts with the Chicago White Sox last season, going 12-6 with a 4.64 ERA.
The right-hander was originally scheduled to start last week, but a rainout against Minnesota pushed it back. He's 7-5 with a 4.29 ERA in 21 outings against Texas.
Young and Adrian Beltre have the most experience among the Rangers against Garcia. Young is 12 for 41 while Beltre is 6 for 28.
Garcia's batterymate is expected to be Gustavo Molina -- the only major leaguer who's been on an active roster since opening day that has yet to play.
Derek Holland (2-0, 2.25) will get the call for Texas. He's 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in his two career starts against the Yankees in 2009, but was more effective in last year's playoffs with 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and a 1-0 mark in two appearances.
The left-hander has pitched very well in his first two 2011 starts and allowed five hits over six innings in Sunday's 3-0 victory at Baltimore.
Derek Jeter is 6 for 10 against Holland, including the postseason, while Mark Teixeira is 2 for 9.
Jeter and Teixeira were among six Yankees to hit into double plays Friday to tie an AL record. New York lost despite a 9-4 advantage in hits.
"We needed some good things to happen," Texas manager Ron Washington said, "and those double plays were good."
Teixeira was hitless in four at-bats to drop to .205 this season. A notoriously slow starter, he's a career .231 hitter in March and April.
Curtis Granderson was the only hitter to homer for either team Friday. New York (.485) and Texas (.471) are the AL's top clubs in slugging percentage.
RangersYoung has a 16-game hitting streak in the Bronx and will face Garcia, making his first start with the Yankees in Saturday's matchup with the Texas Rangers.
