Seeing as the Red Sox haven't won since, they may need an encore even more.
Two days off -- one scheduled and one rainout -- didn't help Boston, which saw its nightmarish April continue Friday with a 7-6 defeat to open this series. Despite scoring their second-most runs of the season, the Red Sox dropped to 2-10 for the first time since 1996, when they opened 2-12.
Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis gave the Red Sox an early three-run lead with homers in the third inning, but the club's newcomers continued to struggle. Adrian Gonzalez went 0 for 4 hours after signing a $154 million, seven-year contract extension, and Carl Crawford's average sunk to .137 after an 0-for-5 effort that elicited boos from the restless Boston fans.

"They have to boo," Crawford said. "I'm playing real bad. We're playing real bad as a team so you definitely understand. You can't be upset about that. You kind of feel their frustration a little bit. We're frustrated, too."
Another offseason acquisition, reliever Bobby Jenks, took the loss after surrendering all four Toronto runs in a seventh-inning rally that broke open a tie game.
Boston hasn't won since Sunday, when Beckett (1-1, 2.08 ERA) came up with one of the best performances of his career. The right-hander limited the New York Yankees to two singles and one walk while striking out 10 in eight innings of a 4-0 victory.
"When our turn (in the rotation) comes, we're not thinking about what happened yesterday or in the future," Beckett said. "You just take it really day by day."
Beckett's outing was particularly encouraging in light of his performance in 2010, when he finished 6-6 with a 5.78 ERA while battling injuries in his worst season as a pro.
Beckett's history against the Blue Jays (7-6) is considerably less encouraging. The right-hander is 3-6 with as 7.03 ERA in 14 career starts versus Toronto. Since the start of 2008, he's 0-3 with an 11.85 ERA and .361 opponent batting average in six outings against the Blue Jays, giving up at least one home run in each.
Toronto first baseman Adam Lind is 8 for 16 with a homer and four doubles off Beckett, while second baseman Aaron Hill is 13 for 32 with a home run and six doubles. Jose Bautista is 3 for 6 with two homers against Beckett.
Bautista singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh Friday. The rally made a winner of Brett Cecil, who settled down after yielding the pair of homers to pitch six solid innings, enabling Toronto to earn its fifth come-from-behind win of 2011.
"This team is not going to quit and neither am I," Cecil said.
The Blue Jays, who are looking to win three straight for the first time this season, have amassed 15 runs, 22 hits, 10 walks and six stolen bases in their last two games.
Toronto will send Jo-Jo Reyes (0-1, 5.23) to the mound for his third start. After a rough debut in which he gave up five runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings against Oakland, he took the loss Sunday but pitched much better, limiting the Los Angeles Angels to three runs -- one earned -- over seven innings of a 3-1 defeat.
Reyes has never faced the Red Sox.
