Gallardo has made three career starts against the Giants -- all at Miller Park -- going 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA. The loss came in his last start against San Francisco on Sept. 5, 2009, when Matt Cain (3-3, 3.53 ERA) beat him 3-2.
Cain will oppose Gallardo again Sunday, though he's struggled since a 2-0 start. The right-hander is 1/3 with a 4.43 ERA in his last seven outings after allowing four runs in six innings Tuesday in a 5-1 loss to Florida.
Cain has fared well against the bulk of Milwaukee's lineup, including Corey Hart, who is just 1 for 10 lifetime against Cain.
However, Hart has hit well over his last four games, going 6 for 15 (.400) which includes a three-homer, seven-RBI game Tuesday against the Nationals.
Ryan Braun is 4 for 12 in his career against Cain and has hit safely in 16 of 17 games. He scored the winning run Saturday after he led off the ninth inning with a single.
While the Brewers have been surging, the defending World Series champion Giants (28-23) have struggled. They've lost three of four following a five-game winning streak and fell Saturday after rallying from two down in the eighth inning.
"They battled," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Down two runs, and they found a way to tie and had a good opportunity."
Right fielder Cody Ross misplayed a hit by Carlos Gomez in the first inning, resulting it what was scored as an inside-the-park home run.
"It should not be an inside-the-park home run," Ross said. "What happened was I went down to go get it and I whiffed, and it got by me. Error. That's it."
San Francisco had won five straight in Milwaukee before the loss.
